Understanding Projector Technologies

There’s a few different technologies projector manufacturers use in their projectors. Here’s a quick look at how the different technologies work in the projectors for rent we offer and the pros and cons of each.

DLP (Digital Light Processing)
DLP technology comes in 2 types (single chip and three chips). Single chip DLP projectors are the most common projectors in the market usually marketed towards business, education and home theater while the three chip DLP projectors are for higher-end commercial applications. DLP technology generally offers a good balance of performance and price. These are typically used for smaller meetings requiring PowerPoint presentations and even for outdoor movie night.

DLP works by bouncing light off of a single digital mirror chip that has thousands of tiny mirrors each representing a single pixel. The mirrors tilt back and forth to deflect light to create an image. The advantage of DLP is their deep rich blacks and high contrast ratios while they are limited on their brightness. 3 chip DLP works the same but with 3 digital mirror chips and offers a higher lumens output but also at a significantly higher cost. Our DLP projector inventory includes both sing chip and 3 chip technology.

LCD (Liquid Crystal Display)
All of our LCD projectors use 3 LCD micro display chips (one for each primary color R, B, G). These display chips transmit the light through them as separate colors that are converged similar to an LED LCD TV. Because of this, LCDs are able to produce greater color definition and a wider array of color variations and a much sharper image.

Laser (Laser Phosphor)
Laser projectors are the latest in projector technology. They offer big advantages over DLP or LCD technology such as; they are far more reliable, offer longer lasting brightness and improved color and contrast. While we own a lot of DLP and LCD projectors for rent, our laser projector inventory has been growing over the past few years. These are great for use by production companies on larger projects.

Not only are laser projectors are much brighter, they tend to have wider color spaces and deeper black levels. The image degradation ramp is significantly more gradual than lamp style projectors. Because of the image consistency laser provides, they are also much easier to use in complex situations where you will be edge blending multiple projectors. On top of this they also offer much greater installation flexibility by allowing them to be mounted at any point of a 360 degree radius. The downside to laser projectors is their upfront cost is usually higher. With that said if you’re wondering how much a laser projector rental costs, fill out our quick quote or give us a call. We’ve passed on the savings in lower maintenance onto our customers and have been told by our customers that our prices are extremely competitive.
