Apple is expected to make some minor tweaks to its product line-up in the fall but don’t expect major hardware and software upgrades. The iPhone 6 will improve, as well as the Apple TV, but the iPad has nothing new on the horizon.
Here are the enhancements that Apple is likely to make and what it means to you from a business prospective as you look to rent a computer and mobile devices in the future.
5 Apple Product Enhancements
According to Piper Jaffray, the Apple TV will have updated hardware and software that will allow it to run more apps than ever before.
They also predict the “Hey Siri” feature in iOS Version 8 will run on this TV. How will this help your business? If your company’s thermostats, lights and other devices are connected to the Apple TV, all of these entities can be controlled via a voice command.
Mac Rumors, expects the introduction of the iPhone 6S and 6S Plus next month, which will be 3-6% thicker than the iPhone 6, respectively. It is speculated that the additional thickness means the cameras will no longer be protruding from the back of the phone.
In addition, these new iPhones will have 1715 mAh battery capacity (instead of the 1810 mAh currently offered) – a milliampere is 1000th of an Ampere hour (mAh). It is commonly used to describe the energy charge that a battery will hold and how long a device will run before the battery needs recharging. For businesses, this will increase the power of the device thus allowing it to have longer battery life.
Mac Rumors also speculates the possibility of a 4” iPhone 6C, which is the natural transition path for those users wanting to upgrade from a 5C or 5S without an increase in footprint.
Many predict that no changes will occur to the existing iPad product lineup this fall. In case you have forgotten, here is the iPad rental line-up.
Mac Rumors expect a new version of Apple’s operating system this fall. Enhancements will focus on the overall performance of the iOS as well as enhancements to Siri such as contextual reminders. and a curated list of contacts and apps within Siri Suggests.
According to Business Insider, Apple is testing to become its own Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO). This service is a virtual carrier network that provides technology companies lease space from established carriers and would allow Apple to sell MVNO to customers directly across the United States and Europe. What does this mean for your business? Professionals will be able to use their iPhones in the United States and Europe on a seamless basis at a fixed cost. As of today, Apple denies their plans in this direction.
In addition, there is great speculation that Apple will become its own wireless provider. In order to pull this off by the fall, they will have to move forward with the GSMA (an Association dedicated to Global System for Mobile communication, a telephony system that is widely used in Europe and other parts of the world) and produce an electronic SIM card that avoids locking the iPhone into any particular wireless carrier.
Business Insider speculates that voicemail messages will be sent to the iCloud directly via Siri, thus eliminating the need for users to check voicemail.
This enhancement could relay to the recipient where the caller is and deliver their message to the cloud. Although this enhancement may be announced in the fall, it will likely be delivered sometime in 2016 along with iOS 10.
