How the iPad Pro Stacks Up Against Other Tablets

“Today, we have the biggest news in iPad since the iPad,” stated Apple CEO Tim Cook on September 9th when he unveiled the iPad Pro, which is set to ship in November.

But is it really?

This new iPad will need to compete against tablets like Microsoft’s Surface Pro 3 and Samsung’s Galaxy Note Pro and even its own iPad Air 2.

So just how does it stack up and what “new” does it bring to the table? Here is a summary of the new iPad Pro offering in comparison to its major tablet competitors, and what it means to you from an enterprise prospective.

Large Retina Display Screen

The iPad Pro screen is 12.9 inches with 2,732 x 2,048 pixels – the largest screen in the industry with the greatest pixel depth. But, the reality is just the same pixel per inch as the iPad Air 2, which already has awesome definition on its 9.7 inch screen.
The Surface Pro 3 has a 12 inch screen with 2,160 x 1,440 pixels and the Galaxy Note Pro is 12.2 inches with 2,560 x 1,600 pixels.
For intricate projects that require large viewing areas and in-depth color display, the iPad Pro is a real winner.

A9X System Chip

Apple states the A9X chip delivers up to 1.8 times the CPU performance and double the graphics performance than the iPad Air 2’s A8x chip. Plus, this chip with 64-bit desktop-class architecture gives iPad Pro the power to take on tasks that were once saved for workstations or PCs.

The Surface Pro 3 has an Intel Core i3, i5 or i7 depending on the model. The Samsung Note Pro has an octa-core processor. However, even given Apple’s performance improvements, TechnologyNewseXtra rates the Surface Pro 3 as the fastest of the three devices.

Apple Pencil

This pencil is designed for use exclusively with the iPad Pro and can allow the user to annotate on the screen. Use it while you and your team brainstorm. Sketch out a plan for a peer review. Or use the highlighter to draw attention to what’s most important in complex litigation proceeding.

While Apple Pencil is not part of the iPad Pro package, the Surface Pro 3 and Galaxy Note Pro have a stylus as part of their product.  In fact, the latter two devices market the use of the stylus to mark things on an email, markup presentations or take notes.

Smart Keyboard

Exclusively for the iPad Pro, this keyboard frees the user from switches, plugs and pairing. You unfold the Smart Keyboard when you need it. When you don’t, fold it up and it becomes a slim, lightweight cover for iPad Pro.

This offering looks and feels just like the Surface and Galaxy keyboards, right down to the kickstand.

iOS 9

While this operating system will run on other Apple devices, iOS 9 has many features that can be maximized on the Pro’s large screen, such as:

  • Opening a second app without leaving the one you’re in
  • Split View: having two apps open and active at the same time
  • Handoff lets you pick up right where you left off. For example, start writing an email on your iPhone and pick up where you left off when you sit down at your mac rental.

While the Surface Pro 3 runs with Windows 10 and the Note Pro uses the Android operating system, many of the features of iOS 9 are integrated in these operating systems as well. When you are looking to rent an iPad or tablet, you need to take into account the operating system your users are most familiar with and the depth of applications each operating system supports.

Apple is Serious about Enterprise Customers

"The iPad Pro is clearly aimed at the enterprise," says Jan Dawson, chief analyst and founder of Jackdaw, a technology research and advisory firm. "The keyboard, the pencil, the side-by-side multitasking; all that kind of stuff is designed to make this a true alternative to a PC."
