6 Ways to Appreciate Veterans on Their Special Day

Tomorrow is Veterans Day. You probably know someone who served or is currently serving in the military in the overarching effort to keep our country safe. Tomorrow, and hopefully throughout the next year, consider honoring veterans through a gesture of kindness, token of appreciation or business initiative focused on this demographic market.

6 Ways to Make a Difference

  1. Simply say “thank you”.
Whether it is a call to a friend or family member or stopping a veteran on the street, take the time to let them know how much you appreciate their service to this country.

  2. Write a letter.
A Million Thanks is a nonprofit that has a goal to see that our military – active, reserve, and veterans – receive letters whether they are serving at home, abroad, or are injured in hospitals.

  3. Make a donation.
The Code of Support Foundation provides essential and critical one-on-one assistance to those struggling service members, veterans and their families who have the most complex needs.

  4. Volunteer.
Give an Hour allows you to help veterans with their business acumen skills needed in today’s competitive marketplace.

  5. Hire a veteran.
According to the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America more than 25% of vets have searched for more than a year for a job after leaving the military.  The Returning Heroes Tax Credit is a credit of 40% of the first $14,000 of wages (up to $5,600) for employers who hire veterans who have been in receipt of unemployment insurance or compensation for longer than 6 months.

In addition, according a study by Vet-Tech, veterans typically have the following skills that can transition nicely into the work environment:

    1. Work well with teams

    2. Focus on execution

    3. Bounce back from failures and

    4. Are knowledge seekers

  6. Buy from a veteran owned business.
According to the National Veteran Owned Business Association, 70% of American would prefer to do business with a veteran owned business than one that is not.
